LAGIP: Resilience Through Dance and Kali
Carson Civic Center
Carson, CA
Share this event:

LAGIP in the Ilocano language of the Philippines translates to memory. We invite participants to learn movement phrases of the Philippine folk dance, Sakuting, and methods of kali (Philippine stick fighting) to explore movement crossovers and use of percussion between Philippine martial arts and dance. Kali is a Filipino martial art best known for its stick fighting, and encompasses both armed and unarmed fighting methods that are historically rooted in the use of edged weapons.

LAGIP will take place both indoors and outdoors of the Carson Civic Center, acknowledging its Dr. Jose Rizal commemoration statue instated in 2012 by the Dr. Jose P. Rizal Monument Movement (JPRMM) and sculpted by Toyn de Leon Imao. Dr. Rizal is a celebrated key figure of Philippine independence and revolution.
